Das Studium der Gewichte und Ma\u00dfe (Metrologie) des Alten Orients gilt seit langem als wertvolle Methode zum Verst\u00e4ndnis der wirtschaftlichen Interaktionen und der Art und Weise der Quantifizierung in der Antike. Der gesellschaftliche Wert des Messwesens und die Allgegenw\u00e4rtigkeit messtechnischer Handlungen und Instrumente sind jedoch noch nicht vollst\u00e4ndig erkannt worden. Wiegen und Messen sind menschliche Prozesse, an denen unterschiedliche Personen beteiligt sind (Experten und Buchhalter, H\u00e4ndler und Kunden) und die auf kulturell konstruierten Vorstellungen wie Gerechtigkeit, Normung und Genauigkeit beruhen.
\nIn dieser Hinsicht erg\u00e4nzen sich epigraphische und arch\u00e4ologische Quellen gegenseitig. Die schriftlichen Quellen erm\u00f6glichen eine Ann\u00e4herung an die Wiege- und Messpraktiken vor allem aus der Sicht der Verwalter wirtschaftlicher und politischer Organisationen, w\u00e4hrend arch\u00e4ologische Materialreste und bildliche Darstellungen Einblicke in die allt\u00e4glichen Aktivit\u00e4ten von Privatpersonen, die an Handel und Austausch beteiligt waren, Messbeamten und Palast- oder Tempelpersonal gew\u00e4hren. Die Querverweise und Verflechtungen dieser Quellen, die in diesem Buch von internationalen Experten und Nachwuchswissenschaftlern vorgestellt werden, sollen zeigen, wie interdisziplin\u00e4re Studien zu Gewichten und Ma\u00dfen einen Einblick in die Gesellschaften des Alten Orients geben.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The study of weights and measures (metrology) of the Ancient Near East has long been understood as a valuable method for understanding ancient economic interactions and ways of quantification. However, the social value of metrology and the ubiquity of metrological actions and tools has not yet been fully recognized. Weighing and measuring are human processes that involve different people (experts and accountants, dealers and customers) and are based on culturally constructed representations such as the notions of justice, standardization and accuracy.
\nIn this respect, epigraphic and archaeological sources complement each other. The epigraphic sources facilitate an approach towards weighing and measuring practices mainly through the point of view of the administrators of economic and political organisations, while archaeological material remains and depictions in images grant insight into the daily activities of private people involved in trade and exchange, measurement experts and palace or temple staff. The cross-referencing and interlacing of these sources, presented in this book by international experts and young scholars, aims to demonstrate how interdisciplinary studies of weights and measures provide a window on Ancient Near Eastern societies.<\/p>\n
