Die vorliegende Abhandlung widmet sich den arch\u00e4ologischen Belegen f\u00fcr Baudekor im Mesopotamien des zweiten Jahrtausends v. Chr. und versucht unter Ber\u00fccksichtigung verschiedener zeitgen\u00f6ssischer Quellen die unterschiedlichen Aspekte dieser architektonischen Ausdrucksform zu beleuchten.
Im Vordergrund stehen Sakralbauten, da die F\u00fclle an Belegen sie als den bevorzugten und nicht selten einzigen Tr\u00e4ger der hier behandelten Formen des Baudekors ausweist. Der plastische Baudekor an den Au\u00dfen- und Hoffassaden altorientalischer Tempel ist neben ihrer monumentalen Bauweise einer der unmittelbarsten architektonischen Formalismen, mit deren Hilfe der sakrale Raum bildkr\u00e4ftig von der \u00fcbrigen Stadtbebauung abgegrenzt wird. Die ostentative Morphologie sakraler Bauk\u00f6rper unterstreicht die architektonische Distinktion zwischen \u201eTempeln\u201c, \u201eWohnh\u00e4usern\u201c oder \u201ePal\u00e4sten\u201c, die im altorientalischen Sprachverst\u00e4ndnis deutlich unsch\u00e4rfer zu Tage tritt. Dar\u00fcber hinaus bilden die oft \u00fcber Jahrhunderte gepflegten Sakralbauten innerhalb des wechselhaften urbanen Umfelds eine wichtige architektonische Konstante und stehen in dieser Hinsicht den zumeist kurzlebigeren Palast- und Profanbauten entgegen.
Die sakrale Architektur wird dadurch zu einem bedeutenden und vor allem dauerhaften Bezugspunkt f\u00fcr die r\u00e4umliche Orientierung der Stadtbewohner und ist daher nicht nur als leblose, r\u00e4umliche Kulisse der Gesellschaft zu verstehen, sondern als eigenst\u00e4ndiges, aktives und lenkendes System, dessen Kommunikationspotential selbst nach Jahrtausenden nicht erloschen ist.<\/p>\n

This study deals with the archaeological examples of architectural ornamentation in 2nd-millennium Mesopotamia. Diverse contemporary sources have been consulted in the attempt to elucidate the differing aspects of this form of expression by architecture. The emphasis is on sacred buildings as, by abundant examples, they are shown to be the preferred \u2013 and often only \u2013 carriers of those forms of architectural ornamentation that are here treated. Besides the monumentality of construction the ornaments at the outer as well as at the courtyard fa\u00e7ades of temples in the Ancient Near East are among the most obvious architectural formalisms that mark the sacred space off from other buildings in town. The ostentatious morphology of sacred buildings underlines the architectural differentiation between \u203atemples\u2039, \u203adwelling-houses\u2039 and \u203apalaces\u2039, a differentiation which is far from emerging as clear-cut in the usage of the respective ancient languages. The sacred buildings tend to be carefully looked after throughout centuries, thus forming an important architectural landmark within a changeful urban environment \u2013 in contrast to more short-lived palaces and other profane buildings. In this way, sacred architecture becomes a meaningful and long-lasting reference point for the inhabitants\u2019 orientation; sacred architecture is more than the lifeless background of a society, it is rather an active guiding system whose communicative potential has not ceased to exist, not even after millennia.<\/p>\n
