Die Beitr\u00e4ge in diesem Band gehen auf eine internationale Tagung zur\u00fcck, die 2016 am Center for Advanced Studies <\/i>der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit\u00e4t M\u00fcnchen abgehalten wurde, unterst\u00fctzt von der M\u00fcnchner Graduiertenschule Distant Worlds<\/i> und den Instituten f\u00fcr Vorderasiatische Arch\u00e4ologie sowie Assyriologie und Hethitologie.
\nArch\u00e4olog*innen und Philolog*innen waren aufgerufen einen synthetischen Blick auf arch\u00e4ologische und textliche Zeugnisse zu werfen, die uns \u00fcber die materielle Ausstattung von vorderasiatischen Tempeln des dritten und zweiten Jahrtausends v. Chr. informieren. Dabei sollte einerseits die Bedeutung von Artefakten f\u00fcr die Konstitution sakraler R\u00e4ume diskutiert werden, andererseits die soziale Funktion, die dem \u00dcbergeben von Ausstattungsgegenst\u00e4nden (\u201cWeihgaben\u201d) an einen Tempel innewohnt, inklusive deren ideologischer und \u00f6konomischer Dimension. Die Fokussierung auf Artefakte und Handlungen f\u00fchrte zu einem ergebnisreichen Austausch zwischen den Disziplinen, jenseits der sonst \u00fcblichen Beschr\u00e4nkung auf spezifische Objektgruppen oder Textgenres.
\nEinige Autor*innen nutzten f\u00fcr ihre Analysen Artefakt-, Bild- und Textkorpora, die der Forschung zwar schon lange bekannt, jedoch niemals umfassend und kontextorientiert ausgewertet worden waren. Andere konnten auf die Evidenz j\u00fcngerer Ausgrabungen zur\u00fcckgreifen, bei denen die stratigraphischen und kontextuellen Zusammenh\u00e4nge besser erfasst und die M\u00f6glichkeiten naturwissenschaftlicher Analyse genutzt worden waren.
\nDer Band behandelt Tempel, die sich sich im heutigen Irak (Ur, Nippur, Khafajeh, I\u0161\u010dali, Assur), in Syrien (Mari, Tell Bazi, Aleppo) und der T\u00fcrkei (Bo\u011fazk\u00f6y) befinden, und in Zeitr\u00e4ume von der Fr\u00fchen bis in die Sp\u00e4te Bronzezeit (ca. 2800\u20131200 v. Chr.) datieren. Unterschiedliche Quellengattungen wie Verwaltungstexte, Weihinschriften, verschiedenste Gegenst\u00e4nde, Architekturbestandteile sowie zwei- und dreidimensionale Bildwerke dienten als Ausgangspunkte der Untersuchungen. Sie alle tragen zum Ziel bei, das Zusammenspiel zwischen Dingen, Bildern und Handlungen, das einen Raum zu einem Ort der Begegnung zwischen Menschen und G\u00f6ttern macht, besser zu verstehen.<\/p>\n

The contributions in this volume \u2014 resulting from an international conference held in 2016 at the Center for Advanced Studies of Ludwig- Maximilians-University Munich and supported by the LMU Graduate School for Ancient Studies \u2018Distant Worlds\u2019 \u2014 aim to integrate material remains, textual sources, and the visual record regarding ancient Near Eastern temple inventories of the third and second millennia BCE. The conference encouraged researchers with archaeological and philolo- gical backgrounds to engage in holistic approaches to the constitution of sacred space and to the societal function as well as ideological and economic impacts of sacred gifting. Its focus on objects and practices led to a fruitful exchange with increased emphasis on entire assem- blages instead of exclusive treatments of distinct object categories or text genres.
Several contributions in this volume build on archaeological and tex- tual evidence that was excavated in the early twentieth century but re- mains in continuous need for contextual and synthetic analyses. Others discuss more recent excavations undertaken with closer attention to contextual and stratigraphic details and exploiting new opportunities for scientific analyses. The temples under consideration range geogra- phically from modern-day Iraq (Ur, Nippur, Khafajeh, I\u0161\u010dali, Assur) and Syria (Mari, Tell Bazi, Aleppo) to Turkey (Bo\u011fazk\u00f6y), and chronologically from the Early to the Late Bronze Age (c. 2800\u20131200 BCE). Discussions start off from diverse sources such as administrative texts, votive in- scriptions, small-scale finds, architectural installations, or three- and two-dimensional figurative artefacts but all contribute to an overall goal: To better understand the entwinement of the things, images, and practices that changed a physical space into a locus of encounter between humans and the divine.<\/p>\n
